Many people have an uneven upper and lower jaw (prognathism). Such misalignments can make chewing, speaking and swallowing difficult. In addition, many patients also suffer psychologically from their profile. Today, facial specialists can surgically reposition any region of the jaw and facial skeleton.
This not only restores impaired functions, but the maxillofacial surgeon can also correct the facial profile and thus the aesthetic appearance of the patient.
Due to the complexity of the anatomical structures in the facial area (muscles, nerves, etc.), well-known and proven methods and/or state-of-the-art techniques such as lasers, navigation aids and computer technology are used to perform operations precisely and gently.
As a so-called "polyclinic", the department does not have its own ward, but treats its patients on an outpatient or interdisciplinary inpatient basis. For operations within the medical focus areas, there is close cooperation with the anaesthesia, paediatric, ear, nose and throat, dermatology, surgery, dental clinic and the oral and maxillofacial surgery department of the Bundeswehr Hospital in Ulm.
As part of maximum care, polytraumatised patients are treated together with the Ear, Nose and Throat Clinic and the Surgery Department.
