Contraindications for an MR examination

Absolute contraindications for the MRI examination

  • Most pacemakers and defibrillators (for MRI-compatible devices, please plan a visit to our pacemaker outpatient clinic directly before and after the examination and bring the implant certificate with you)
  • LVAD systems
  • Cochlear implants, implanted insulin pumps (external pumps must be removed for the examination), neurostimulators, erectile tissue implants
  • Bladder pacemakers
  • Ferromagnetic metal clips, e.g. after carotid TEA or neurosurgical operations (please obtain prior clarification or manufacturer information)
  • Metal splinters in critical localisation: eye, in the brain, intrathoracic or close to vessels
  • Vascular stents if the implantation was less than 72 hours ago
  • Joint prosthesis or metal implants for bone stabilisation if they were implanted less than 6 weeks ago (if the implants are made of titanium, an MR examination is possible without any problems 6 weeks after implantation)
  • Fresh myocardial infarction and vascular stents implanted less than 72 hours ago
  • large-area tattoos made of metal-containing dyes
  • metallic trans- or subdermal jewellery implants

Piercings must be able to be removed for the examination.

No contraindication:

  • Event recorders: however, they should be read out before the scan, as erasure of stored data cannot be ruled out.
  • Heart valve prostheses (except for the very early devices)
  • Most intravascular stents (please obtain prior clarification or manufacturer information)
  • MitraClips
  • Umbrellas (occluders) in the cardiac septum or atrial appendage
  • Joint prostheses, nails or similar that are older than 6 weeks
  • Intrauterine device ("IUD") - however, a gynaecological check should be carried out after the examination, as slippage in the magnetic field with subsequent inadequate contraceptive protection cannot be ruled out

Relative contraindications for the MRI examination

(The indication for the examination must be examined critically, but is generally possible)

  • Fear of confined spaces
  • Pregnancy
  • Known intolerance to adenosine and MR contrast media

The administration of contrast medium is necessary for some questions.

In the case of severely impaired renal function (GFR ≤ 30ml/min kg bw) or the need for dialysis, the examination is only carried out according to the strictest indication and on a case-by-case basis
