For patients
"Health is the greatest good"
We, the Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine, are here to support you during a planned or emergency operation at the University Hospital on both the Oberer Eselsberg and Michelsberg campuses. We are at your side during a stay in our intensive care units, in emergencies in hospital or on the streets of Ulm and the surrounding area, as well as for chronic pain in our pain outpatient clinic or ward.
Anaesthesia
Even a planned operation is an exceptional situation for most people, accompanied by worries, fears and discomfort. In order to provide you with the best possible care during this special phase, our team will support you during procedures and operations and ensure the lowest possible risk and a pain-free operation. We work together with many other departments at Ulm University Hospital to ensure optimal and individualised care across all age groups, from premature babies to very elderly patients.
In order to provide you with a professional anaesthetic in accordance with the latest quality and safety standards, we discuss your individual anaesthetic risk and necessary measures together in our premedication outpatient clinic based on your previous illnesses and medical findings. During the operation, a member of our team will be at your side at over 40 workstations at all times to watch over you. After the operation, you will continue to be cared for in our recovery rooms or in one of our intensive care units.

Here we provide the highest level of care and monitoring and, if necessary, carry out all standard organ replacement procedures such as ventilation, dialysis and circulatory support through to special procedures such as ECMO. A dedicated and caring intensive care and physiotherapy team is waiting to help you recover as quickly as possible.

Emergency medicine
In the emergency medical service, we are responsible for the safety and rapid care of the population at three locations (Michelsberg, Oberer Eselsberg, Kuhberg) in the extended catchment area of the city of Ulm. We also provide an emergency standby service at the University Hospital for life-threatening events that occur in the hospital. In addition, we support our surgical and internal medicine colleagues in life-threatening emergencies in the interdisciplinary emergency department if required.
Pain therapy
Another mainstay of our clinic is pain therapy for acute and chronic pain. We provide holistic treatment for chronic pain both on an outpatient and inpatient basis on our pain ward. As part of the acute pain service, we look after you in the surgical clinic and throughout the university hospital.
