Consultation hours / Contact / Appointments
Outpatient registration
- You need a referral from your GP or treating specialist.
- You can register by telephone on 0731 500-60033
Monday - Friday | 08:00 - 12:00 |
- You will receive a detailed questionnaire from us. This must be completed by you and returned to us.
- Together with the completed questionnaire, please also send us any important previous findings.
- Once we have received your documents, you will be placed on our waiting list and will be notified of an appointment as soon as possible.
Patients who register for the special consultation for tumour-related pain (flyer) will be seen as soon as possible. The consultation takes place on Tuesdays and by appointment. Please bring findings relating to your tumour disease and other previous illnesses with you to these appointments, unless they were collected at Ulm University Hospital. We also ask you to bring a current medication schedule.
The outpatient consultations take place in the outpatient pain clinic of the Pain Therapy Section. You will find this in the surgical clinic in the university outpatient clinic area.
Pain ward F6
You can reach the pain ward by calling 0731 500-53440.
The medical care of the inpatient pain patient is provided by the staff of the pain therapy section.
Please note that direct admission to the pain ward is not possible. Admission to the ward takes place after the patient has presented to the pain outpatient department.
Acute pain service
In the acute pain service, we look after patients in the surgical clinic in order to achieve the best possible pain control in the first few days after operations. The decision as to whether an appropriate procedure is suitable for you will be made together with you in a preliminary anaesthesiological consultation (in individual cases also after the operation).
Consultancy service
We offer a comprehensive consultation service for colleagues from all specialist departments at the university hospital. In the case of more complex pain problems, we are consulted by them in order to optimise pain therapy for inpatients and outpatients.

Symptomatology
Patients with all pain disorders are treated both medically and medico-psychologically, e.g:
- Painful tumour diseases
- Degenerative diseases of the skeletal system
- Fibromyalgia syndrome
- Nerve pain (e.g. shingles, phantom pain, etc.)
- Pain of central origin (e.g. after a stroke)
- CRPS (Sudeck's disease)
- Headache disorders
- Somatoform pain disorders
- Pain caused by circulatory disorders
- Withdrawal treatments (withdrawal attempts for long-term opioid therapy, discontinuation of analgesics for drug-induced headaches)
- Postoperative pain
The treatment and diagnosis of patients is carried out in close cooperation with the other clinical specialities at Ulm University Hospital.
Diagnostics & Therapy
Depending on the diagnosis, symptoms and indications, all standard treatment methods are used as part of a multimodal therapy concept:
- Invasive procedures, e.g. in the post-operative area and for advanced tumour diseases (patient-controlled analgesia, spinal cord and peripheral catheter procedures)
- Treatment of CRPS (Sudeck's disease) (sympathetic nerve blocks, intravenous guanethidine blocks)
- Differentiated pharmacotherapy
- Medical-psychological procedures (relaxation procedures, biofeedback, individual and group therapy), or the use of TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation)
Physical and physiotherapeutic forms of treatment are carried out in co-operation with the physiotherapy department.
Teaching
As part of university teaching, we are responsible for organising the cross-sectional subject QF14 "Pain Medicine" and the elective subject "Clinical Pain Therapy" for particularly interested students. We are also involved in several lectures in which we impart pain medicine knowledge.
