In life-threatening emergencies, please always contact the emergency services first via the central emergency number 112 .
Medical assistance at night, at weekends and on public holidays
Are you ill and the doctors' surgeries are closed? Are you not suffering from a life-threatening illness but cannot wait until the next consultation time? Then GPs and specialists on medical on-call duty can help. You can either go directly to an open on-call practice in your area or call 116117. The 116117 staff know doctors in your area or will send a doctor to your home if necessary.
The KV practice of the emergency medical service of the Ulm region is located in the emergency department (ZINA) of the Bundeswehrkrankenhaus Ulm. All patients present themselves at the ZINA registration desk. Clear criteria are used to allocate patients to the KV practice or emergency room.

As we have to deal with around 40,000 patient contacts per year, we use a "triage system" to ensure that resources are allocated in a medically appropriate manner even at times of high workload. Conversely, there may be longer waiting times for patients with non-life-threatening illnesses at such times. We ask for your understanding in this regard.
Triage, e.g. the "Manchester Triage System" (MTS) used here, is a standardised procedure for the systematic initial assessment of the urgency of treatment for emergency patients. A systematic determination of the urgency of treatment leads to an improvement in the quality of treatment. A structured initial assessment ensures that a high urgency for treatment is reliably recognised and that patients are treated as quickly as possible.
Patients are screened by trained staff as soon as they arrive at the emergency department. Patients are categorised according to their complaints and symptoms and not according to how long they have been waiting , which indicates the urgency of treatment. Accordingly, patients in the more urgent category are examined by a doctor earlier than patients who do not have a life-threatening illness. Triaging requires special training for emergency department staff. There are corresponding diagrams for each key symptom, which simplify categorisation and objectify the assessment.
The categorisation can lead to waiting times at times of higher patient volumes, especially for patients classified as non-life-threatening, as they do not require immediate action. This waiting time is therefore unavoidable due to the absolutely necessary immediate treatment of higher categorised patients. The system is based on prioritising treatment according to the severity of the illness.
