Our daily activities in the Central Interdisciplinary Emergency Department (ZINA) focus on providing our patients with the fastest possible care at the medical level of a maximum-care university hospital. All emergency patients at the University Hospital's Oberer Eselsberg site are treated in the ZINA. People with medical conditions of varying degrees of severity visit us. The emergency department is staffed at all times by specially qualified medical and nursing staff. An interdisciplinary team of trauma surgeons and internal medicine doctors work in the ZINA. Specialist doctors from all facilities at Ulm University Hospital can be involved at any time. The emergency department deals with around 40,000 patient contacts per year.
All emergency patients who come to ZINA at Ulm University Hospital are categorised according to the Manchester Triage System (MTS) into five urgency categories, from red (immediate contact with a doctor) to blue (contact with a doctor within 120 minutes). This ensures that treatment is prioritised according to medical urgency.
Medical staffing is made up of a combination of posts permanently assigned to ZINA on the one hand and rotational posts under the disciplinary responsibility of the medical director on the other. The disciplinary assignment of all nursing professions (nurses, medical assistants, medical assistants, paramedics/emergency paramedics) is also the responsibility of the medical director of the emergency department. In this way, the high demands placed on employees working in emergency medicine are ensured both in terms of content and organisation and the immensely important team structure is promoted.
