After completing his degree in psychology at Saarland University in 1996, Bernd Puschner worked as a research assistant at the Department of Educational Sciences II at the University of Mannheim in a longitudinal study focussing on family relationships and the psychosocial development of young people after German reunification. In 1999, he moved to Stuttgart to work at the Research Centre for Psychotherapy, where he was responsible for conducting a large-scale study to examine the effectiveness of outpatient psychotherapy in Germany under everyday conditions.
In 2003, shortly after completing his doctorate, he joined the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy II at the University of Ulm as a senior researcher. There, together with Prof. Thomas Becker, he conducted two randomised clinical trials investigating the effectiveness of outcome feedback and discharge planning for people with severe mental illness. From 2009 - 2013, he was coordinator of the EU-funded multicentre study "Clinical Decision Making and Outcome in Routine Care for People with Severe Mental Illness" (CEDAR). In 2008, he became a member of the board of the "European Network for Mental Health Service Evaluation" (ENMESH). In 2010, he was authorised to teach medical psychology and psychiatric care research by the medical faculty of the University of Ulm. In the same year, the Society for Psychotherapy Research presented him with the Early Career Achievement Award. Since 2012, he has headed the Process-Outcome Research Section of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy II at Ulm University. Since 2015, he has been Senior Associate Editor of the journal Epidemiology and Psychiatric Sciences. In 2018, the University of Ulm awarded him the title of Associate Professor. He is currently coordinating the multicentre study "Using Peer Support In Developing Empowering Mental Health Services" (UPSIDES), funded by the European Union and the Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases, with partners in six countries in Europe, Africa and Asia. Since April 2019 he is Co-Chair of the Mental Health Research Programme of the GACD.
His research interests are process-outcome research and global mental health. His publication list includes 74 peer-reviewed articles in national and international journals, as well as 11 book chapters and over 100 conference papers.
