Pathology is defined as the study of abnormal and pathological processes and conditions in the body and their causes.
It mainly deals with morphologicaldetectable pathological changes in the body.
Pathologists make an essential contribution to patient care by making pathoanatomical, histological and cytological diagnoses, which play a key role in the treatment of many of the patients admitted and treated at Ulm University Hospital. The diagnostic spectrum is constantly updated and expanded in line with scientific and technical progress and includes the established methods of immunomorphology, molecular diagnostics as well as classical and molecular cytogenetic tumour diagnostics.
The pathology department at Ulm University Hospital is also a national reference centre for lymph node and lymphoma diagnostics and is involved in the BMBF-funded national competence network "Malignant Lymphomas", which aims to diagnose as many lymphoma patients as possible according to standardised criteria and to include them in prospective therapy optimisation studies and monitor them after treatment.
