The Sports and Rehabilitation Medicine Department at Ulm University Hospital is one of the licensed sports medicine examination centres of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) and the state of Baden-Württemberg. National and state squad athletes can have their annual sports medical check-up carried out at our centre free of charge in consultation with the relevant association.
A sports medical check-up is generally recommended before starting sports training and as a follow-up or repeat examination or in the presence of cardiovascular risk factors (e.g. high blood pressure). It forms the core of PREVENTION of sports-associated health risks and, according to the new guideline, is intended to improve the health care situation of the population through comprehensive implementation in recreational and popular sports.
Assumption of costs
To date, the costs of sports medical check-ups have not been covered by statutory and private health insurance companies across the board. However, some health insurance companies offer partial cost coverage. You can enquire with your health insurance company whether and which costs are covered. Click here for orientation.
Contents of the sports medical check-up
The sports medical check-up includes a basic examination for each person. In addition, depending on the requirements/wishes of the association/club/insurance provider, personal wishes or medical necessity, further examinations can be carried out by us.
Basic examination:
- Medical history
- Clinical examination
- 12-lead resting electrocardiography (ECG)
Further examinations:
- Laboratory chemical blood test
- Body composition by means of bio-impedance analysis (BIA, "body fat scale")
- Echocardiography ("heart ultrasound")
- "Small" lung function test (spirometry)
- "Large" lung function test (whole-body plethysmography)
- Exercise ECG (treadmill, bicycle/rowing/hand power ergometer), optionally with lactate diagnostics
- Spiroergometry (treadmill, bicycle/rowing ergometer)
- Carotid Doppler examination ("vascular check")
We carry out sports medical check-ups and, on request, preventive and performance diagnostics tailored to the needs of the respective sport for entire sports teams and national/state squads, also as field tests. When selecting the examination procedures, we are guided by the recommendations of the medical societies, the specifications of the associations and insurance providers and your sport-specific and individual needs.
This means that we come to you with our mobile laboratory!
We can draw on our many years of experience with co-operation partners such as 1. FC Heidenheim 1846, SSV Ulm 1846 and various national and state squads (including basketball, fencing, handball and rowing).

Whether in sport or at work: it is worth investing in prevention and keeping staff healthy. We are therefore an important cooperation partner for occupational health management at the UKU and look forward to working together on future projects.
In addition, we also maintain co-operations with external companies, for example by offering management check-ups similar to sports medical check-ups in our section or in the companies on site.
If you are interested in a cooperation, please contact Mrs Fink!
The sports medicine laboratory focuses on molecular and cellular inflammatory and stress reactions in various populations. In addition to studies on the effects of competition and nutrition in adolescent and adult athletes, this also includes investigations into cancer and stem cell therapy patients, COVID-19 and anti-doping research. Gene and protein determinations are examined and analysed in various biomaterials from blood and saliva to muscle tissue in order to generate practical applications from the laboratory results.
