Echinococcosis is a disease caused by a tapeworm of the genus Echinococcus. Alveolar echinococcosis in humans is caused by infection with the fox tapeworm and, if left untreated, usually leads to death. Early detection and appropriate treatment are crucial for patients. Despite intensive research, the clinical treatment of affected patients is difficult and lengthy. The infection in humans usually leads to alveolar tumours in the liver. If these are operable, the tumours are removed. In order to better understand the course of the disease and to investigate further treatment options, samples are collected and analysed from patients at our clinic in cooperation with the Department of Internal Medicine III (PD Dr Beate Grüner).
