Information for our young patients
In order for you to get better, you may need to undergo radiotherapy at our clinic. During radiotherapy, a type of X-ray is used to attack the diseased cells in your body. You will not be able to feel or see the radiation.
Before you undergo radiotherapy, you will come to us with your parents and we will explain to you exactly what happens during radiotherapy. If you have any questions, you can always ask them. After the consultation, we will show you where the radiotherapy takes place and what a radiotherapy machine looks like. No treatment will be carried out on this day.
Before you are irradiated for the first time, we need to check whether you can lie down well. It is important that you lie very still during the radiotherapy so that we irradiate exactly the right area,
If you are being irradiated on the head, we will help you to lie still by fitting you with a plastic mask. To do this, we first pull a thin cotton stocking over your head, then a thin, warm layer of plastic is placed on your face, which is then fanned dry. You don't need to worry that you won't be able to breathe. There are lots of small holes in the mask so that you can breathe. This mask is your own and you will wear it every day during radiotherapy. After your mask fits, we need to take some x-rays so that we can determine the radiation fields. We will then draw some lines on your mask to help us irradiate you correctly every day.
If we irradiate your back or stomach, you will be placed on special pillows.
During the first radiotherapy session, we will check that you are lying well and explain everything to you again. While you are being irradiated, you will have to lie alone for a few minutes, but your parents and we will be able to see and hear you the whole time via a television camera. If necessary, we can interrupt the radiotherapy. When the radiotherapy is finished, you can get up and walk again. You will come back to us at the same time the next day.
If you wish, you can bring your cuddly toy to the radiotherapy session. You can always ask us questions during the radiotherapy. If you have any problems, please tell your doctor. Even when your treatment with us is finished, you and your parents will visit us regularly so that we know how you are doing.
