Multi-slice computed tomography is the examination method of the future for visualising the coronary arteries and the entire heart without the need for cardiac catheterisation. Furthermore, congenital coronary anomalies can be detected. It is also possible to visualise bypasses and check stents in the coronary vessels.

Technique

In multi-slice computed tomography, an X-ray tube rotates around the patient approx. 3 times per second. X-rays are emitted in a fan shape and the attenuated X-rays are measured again on the opposite side using a suitable recording system (the detectors). The resulting images are then processed on our modern workstations.

Examination preparation

Antidiabetic drugs containing the active ingredient "Metformin" (e.g. "Metformin, Glucophage, Competact,...) should be discontinued on the day of the examination until 2 days after the examination if kidney function is impaired. All other medication should be continued.

In order to assess your kidney and thyroid function, we need the laboratory values creatinine and TSH, fT3 and fT4.

You will only need to abstain from food for 4 hours if you are allergic.

Examination procedure

After a detailed discussion with the patient, a venous line is inserted and an ECG is connected. In order to achieve the best possible image quality, you will be given medication to reduce your heart rate and dilate the coronary arteries shortly before the examination. After the iodine-containing contrast agent has been administered, around 300 images of the heart are scanned within a few seconds. In order to achieve the best possible image quality, the patient's breath is held during image acquisition by means of a breathing command. Immediately after the contrast agent is administered, the body experiences a brief but intense feeling of heat, which subsides after a few seconds. After the examination, you can go home after about 30 minutes. We then create 3D reconstructions and findings from the images taken. The images and findings will be sent to the referring doctor.

Please note that you will be restricted from driving for 2 hours after the examination.
