With the increase in medical knowledge and procedures, paediatrics has developed an extensive specialisation in individual specialist areas in recent decades. The associated danger of losing sight of the holistic care of children can be countered by placing particular emphasis on basic training in general paediatric knowledge and skills during the practical year and also at the beginning of specialist training. This is an important goal of the PJ tertial in paediatrics and adolescent medicine.
In order to give you an insight into the very different areas of clinical paediatrics, you will rotate through two different wards of the clinic during the PJ tertial. You will have the opportunity to care for children of all ages. You will also be required to take part in at least one late-night and one weekend shift. Time off in lieu will be granted for participation in these emergency shifts. Working on a ward of your particular interest is possible in principle, but must be agreed in advance with the teaching staff and the ward concerned.
The daily lunch meeting, the regular internal clinic training courses, the training afternoons for paediatricians in private practice and the special PJ seminars, in which problem-oriented topics are worked on in differential diagnosis together with experienced doctors, are used for further theoretical training. The exact dates will be announced in good time or can be obtained from the teaching secretariat at the Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.
For all organisational or content-related questions, as well as for all other problems in the course of the PJ tertial, please contact the student secretariat or the PJ or teaching officers at the Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.
Please note: The basis for an interesting and instructive PJ tertial is the knowledge of paediatrics already acquired in the lectures and internships. You will benefit most from this tertial if you start well prepared. In practical paediatric training, it is often a problem to obtain parental consent for an untrained person to carry out an examination or diagnostic procedure on their child. You should therefore consciously and actively look for opportunities to engage in practical work, including by approaching the parents - together with the ward doctors in charge - or by taking the opportunity to participate in emergency services.
We have introduced a module week to get to know the individual specialist areas of the Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine better. As part of this, modules can be selected individually depending on your area of interest, including paediatric cardiology, intensive care medicine, paediatric neurology/metabolism, pneumology and immunology.
In preparation for the third state examination, we have been offering a mock examination for our PJ students since summer 2019, which takes place twice a year. To ensure that the mock exam is as realistic as possible, the mock exam is based on the first day of the third state exam (patient examination, writing a doctor's letter, presentation at the patient's bedside, Q&A session, feedback to the students). Participation is voluntary
If you are interested in a PJ at the Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, please contact Ms Eveline Wagner, Teaching Office.
Duration: 1 week
Contents: As a block intern, you will rotate through all the wards of the Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine in daily ward placements. In the afternoons, colloquia are held in which various paediatric clinical pictures are explained to you in order to guide you in your own case presentations. You will also take part in lunchtime meetings and ward rounds so that you are able to take your own case histories. You will receive a script to support you during your block week. Your assessment and grading will take place at the end of the block week.
Absences: Due to the short duration of the block placement, one day of absence is not permitted. Missed appointments cannot be made up.
If you are interested in a clinical traineeship at the Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, please submit your application in May (for the summer semester break) or in February (for the winter semester break).
The prerequisite for a clinical traineeship is proof of passing the first medical examination (copy of the certificate required) as well as a current certificate of enrolment (as a copy) and proof of sufficient protection against measles (to be proven by means of a current titer test or submission of a copy of the vaccination card or other official document issued by a doctor).
Medical students applying from other universities must submit further documents. These will be provided on request.
Please send your application to Mrs Eveline Wagner: eveline.wagner@uniklinik-ulm.de
Enrolment for electives takes place via Corona. The list of electives offered and their dates can be found in the course catalogue and on Moodle.
The Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine regularly offers the following electives depending on the semester:
- From symptom to diagnosis
- Paediatric haematology and oncology
- Neonatology
- Neuropaediatric seminar
- Tropical medicine
- Endo-Clinic
The dates for the paediatrics lecture can be found on Moodle and in the course catalogue.
The lecture is designed to give you an insight into all specialist areas of paediatrics, including paediatric endocrinology and cardiology as well as paediatric gastroenterology and pneumology. In addition to this, you can deepen your knowledge in various subject areas in the electives offered by the Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.
The paediatrics lecture exam takes place at the end of the lecture series.
