Children's rights in paediatric clinics

The Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine at Ulm University Hospital (UKU) is committed to the international EACH Charter (European Association for Children in Hospital). It sets out in ten articles the requirements that a hospital must fulfil in order to protect the rights of children during medical care.

You can find more information about children's rights in hospitalhere.

Hieroniemuß Doctor Clowns e. V.

Non-profit organisation for the promotion of health through clown performances in children's hospitals

https://www.doktor-clowns.de/

The number of clowns has risen from 6 to 18. Since July 2000, they have been appearing once a week in several paediatric clinics in the Friedrichshafen - Kempten - Ulm triangle to sweeten the day-to-day lives of young patients on the wards. These doctor clowns (also known as clinic clowns) usually go from room to room in pairs and make clown "rounds".

Some clowns juggle, model balloons, perform magic or make soap bubbles (health bubbles!), fun examinations or just plain nonsense (by the way: nonsense is an old household remedy to relieve muscle tension)... And sometimes they also encourage the children so that they can cope better with a possibly longer hospital stay. Of course, the clowns also respect the wishes of children, parents or staff if they do not wish to visit!

Laughter (not always successful) is known to be an excellent "medicine". Everything goes better with a good mood and humour, including getting well! There are now hospital or doctor clowns in many countries who are involved in various associations and have been doing recognised work for years. Since July 2000, our clown "rounds" have been taking place at Ulm Children's Hospital on Michelsberg, including on the paediatric oncology ward and in the day clinic.

Important: there are no costs for the parents of the sick children. We try to finance our work through donations and sponsors. If you would like to support us, or know someone who would like to do so, you can make a donation to the Doctor Clowns at "your" hospital (see below). On request, you will of course receive a tax-deductible donation receipt.

A friendly smile is already reserved for you. Even without a donation. Because as Charly Chaplin used to say...

"Every day you don't smile is a day lost."

Sibling care

The sibling care centre set up on the ground floor of the Hartmut Blauw parents' house is extremely popular, as the parents of our young patients have the opportunity to entrust their healthy siblings to our qualified childcare staff during the treatment phase.

Spacious play facilities, a perfectly equipped kitchen, quiet rooms and an outdoor playground make the children's stay almost perfect.

To protect our patients, children should not have any infections or infectious diseases. If possible, please bring slippers, drinks and food (as required).

The Sternschnuppe team is looking forward to welcoming the children

We cordially invite you to the church service in the chapel:

Every Saturday at 6.30 pm - organised alternately each week by the Protestant and Catholic hospital chaplaincies.

You will find the chapel in the eye clinic area. It is open day and night as a place of silence for you.

We celebrate the festivals of the year with the children and their parents in the foyer of the paediatric clinic on Saturdays at 4 pm. The current dates are publicised on the wards.

Here you can find the flyer "Pastoral care in the paediatric clinic":

Visiting service

Playing a game of Uno, painting and crafting together, reading a favourite story, building with Lego, talking and listening, soothing in your arms, simply being there ... and much more happens when the women and men of the visiting service come to the children's hospital. They bring their time, their openness and empathy, their creativity and discretion.

This is how the visiting service supports families on a voluntary basis during their stay in hospital: when parents need time for appointments and errands, for siblings, for a walk or simply for a break from the hospital room.

The visiting service comes on request and in direct consultation with the parents. If you would like to be accompanied by the visiting service, you are welcome to contact the staff on your ward or the hospital chaplains Christa Leidig (0173 349 24 33) and Rachel Rau (0173 349 2537) directly.

Psychosocial services in oncology

The psychosocial team accompanies and supports patients and their families during treatment and aftercare.

Serious acute or chronic illnesses fundamentally change life. Affected families have to deal with many new challenges, a completely different everyday life, medical language and feelings of fear and threat.

The psychosocial team accompanies and supports patients and their families during treatment and aftercare. We take into account their questions, needs and concerns, but also their strengths and abilities. Our team of employees from different professional groups offers a wide range of support during this time:

  • Psychological support
  • Educational counselling
  • Art therapy
  • music therapy
  • counselling
  • Social services
  • Hans-Lebrecht-School

You can find information on all psychosocial services in oncology here.

Art therapist Sabine Hartmann

A full-time art therapy unit is available for the intensive care of paediatric oncology patients. The art therapy centre uses rooms on the ward during the week. This small clinic studio can also be used by the families of inpatients in the evenings and at weekends. In the mornings, the room is available to the clinic teachers for lessons and examinations, while the children receive therapeutic care in their rooms.

The painting table is open to patients and relatives of the ward as well as outpatients visiting the day clinic. The special thing about an open programme is that it demands the free will of the patients themselves. The informality often creates a very relaxed and cheerful atmosphere at the painting table.

There are always larger exhibitions where, among other things, the works from art therapy can be seen, and in 2014 an art education student enlivened everyday life on the ward and got involved in a children's book project. In 2015, the children's book "Die reiselustigen Dünenmäuse" was published as part of an exhibition. 100% of the proceeds from the sale went to art therapy in paediatric and adolescent medicine.
These projects serve to maintain the art therapy, which is financed exclusively by donations. Honouring the works is at the forefront of the exhibitions. A special frame allows each picture to appear in a new light. The exhibitions are very well received by the young artists and their families, but also by their colleagues.

Further projects were realised with the generous support of the BW Bank and the Lionshilfswerk Ulm/Neu-Ulm Schwaben e.V as well as our sponsoring associations in 2017 with the underwater world and in 2015 with the installation of the "Michelsberg-Bahn". The employees of the Clinic for Paediatric and Adolescent Medicine also contributed artistically to these projects. A total of 100 people helped with several painting campaigns to create the colourful sea world in a previously dull corridor.

Art therapy is an additional support programme for children and young people affected by serious illness. In order to ensure its continuation and to be able to continue to offer our patients this opportunity to artistically process their experiences with their illness, we would be delighted to receive donations and thank you for your support.
