Pronounced jaw misalignments in adulthood
It has been shown that the treatment of pronounced jaw malpositions (so-called dysgnathia) using purely orthodontic measures can lead to inadequate results and increased recurrences. For successful treatment, these patients often require combined orthodontic and maxillofacial surgery in late adolescence and adulthood.
The treatment process comprises the following stages:
- orthodontic pre-treatment with shaping and harmonisation of the upper and lower dental arches
- Surgical jaw correction with repositioning of one or both jaws
- Fine adjustment and stabilisation of the result after the operation
The aim of this combined orthodontic-jaw surgery therapy is to improve important functions such as chewing, speaking and swallowing. This is usually associated with a change in the external appearance of the face.
Dysgnathia consultation
Treatment planning is carried out in close co-operation with the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Plastic Surgery at the Bundeswehr Hospital in Ulm. In the preparatory and informative discussion during the dysgnathia consultation at the Bundeswehr Hospital you will be advised on the surgical options for correcting the position of the jaw.
