Orthoptics / paediatric ophthalmology

In our vision school, we look after children in all matters relating to the eye and vision. Adults with strabismus or eye movement disorders are also treated. In children, defective vision or strabismus can lead to reduced visual development (amblyopia) with limited spatial vision (stereo vision). Early diagnosis and initiation of treatment are therefore of crucial importance, especially at this age. In our department, we can offer you the entire diagnostic and therapeutic spectrum of strabology both as part of conservative measures (prism prescription, masking therapy - occlusion) and as part of surgical treatment for the majority of strabismus.

Diagnostic offer

  • Determination of visual acuity, spatial vision, eye position and eye mobility
  • Determination of the squint angle
  • Examination of the anterior and posterior segment of the eye
  • Determination of spectacles using skiascopy and autofractometer
  • Pupillometry (determination of pupil size and mobility)
  • Electrophysiological examinations to check the function of the retina
  • Anaesthesia examination
  • Sonography (ultrasound examination)
  • Photo documentation
  • Depending on the clinical picture, cooperation with the paediatric clinic or the neuropaediatric and socio-paediatric centre

Therapeutic offer

  • Determination of spectacles and prism glasses for children and adults
  • Fitting contact lenses for children and adults
  • Prescription of occlusion therapy for children
  • Outpatient or inpatient operations on the straight eye muscles as single-muscle operations, combined and multi-muscle operations
  • Probing and irrigation of paediatric lacrimal duct constrictions under anaesthesia

Diagnosis and treatment of the following clinical pictures

  • All childhood eye diseases
  • All forms of strabismus at any age (including heterophoria)
  • Visual impairment (amblyopia)
  • Diseases of the eye socket
  • Neurological diseases with eye involvement
  • Eye tremor (nystagmus)

Practical tips

  • Patient care is provided by prior appointment and referral from an outpatient ophthalmologist. We ask you to bring a referral slip and a medical report with you.
  • Registration takes place first via the central registration desk in the outpatient eye clinic in the main building.
  • The examination will then take place in the Vision School building. The Vision School is located in an annexe of the Eye Clinic (low-rise building next to the car park on Michelsberg/Frauenstraße).
  • You should always allow a little more time for the initial examination. If you have previous findings, letters or accompanying letters from your treating doctors at home, please bring these with you to the examination. The same applies to old and current spectacles (an old spectacle pass from your optician will also suffice).
  • For adults: Please bear in mind that we may have to dilate your pupils and that you will not be allowed to drive a vehicle on your own afterwards. Please arrange for someone to accompany you home or plan to travel to and from the appointment by public transport. If this is not possible, you will need to make another appointment for pupil dilation. We always endeavour to ensure that your examination runs smoothly and quickly. However, as we carry out extensive examinations, you should still plan enough time for your stay with us and, if you are diabetic, take some food and drink with you.
  • For parents: Your child will receive a very comprehensive examination in just one day. This can therefore often take several hours. Please bring enough food and drink and some toys for your child to make the often long waiting time easier (dilating the pupils takes at least 40-45 minutes). Of course, we also offer a small play corner; your favourite cuddly toy, book or toy can nevertheless be very helpful and indispensable for calming or distraction. We will treat your child with patience and kindness, but for a successful examination we also need your help and patience during the examination so that your child feels well looked after and comfortable.
  • Examination procedure: The examination is first carried out by our experienced orthoptists, who are specially trained in this field. They determine visual acuity, stereo vision, eye position and mobility. The lenses are usually determined by our optician. Finally, the eye examination is carried out by our doctors at the clinic and, depending on the complexity, a final consultation with a specialist/surgeon if necessary. Overall, however, the examination naturally depends on the requirements of the respective clinical picture.
  • In children, it is almost always necessary to dilate the pupil with eye drops, either to determine the lens or for an extensive retinal examination. Vision is then impaired on the day of the examination and sometimes in the days that follow. There is also increased glare and subsequent school attendance may be impaired by reading problems and problems with spatial vision. Subsequent school attendance may only be possible with difficulty or not at all.
  • Please note that this is a time-consuming examination. We would ask you to attend the agreed appointment on time.
