Ocular traumatology

Eye injuries can lead to loss of vision or blindness. Common causes of eye injuries include

  • Blunt trauma
  • Flying pieces of material from explosions or other work (e.g. gardening or construction work)
  • Flying objects such as bullets, fireworks, bungee cords
  • Chemical splashes

If an eye injury occurs, have the eye examined by an ophthalmologist or other physician as soon as possible, even if the injury appears minor at first. Do NOT attempt to treat a serious eye injury yourself, but contact your family doctor, general ophthalmologist or us immediately.

The University Eye Clinic Ulm offers a permanent emergency outpatient clinic as well as a surgical on-call service throughout the year and is the largest reference centre in the entire East Württemberg/West Bavaria region.

All possible eye injuries are treated immediately. These include perforating globe injuries involving several parts of the eyeball, such as corneal-iris-lens injuries. In addition to immediate wound care, the University Eye Hospital Ulm offers the entire surgical spectrum for secondary reconstruction of the injured tissue, such as eyelid reconstruction, corneal reconstruction or transplantation, iris reconstruction incl. customised iris prosthesis, pupilloplasty, secondary lens implantation (iris- or sclera-fixed) as well as retinal reconstruction with various forms of tamponade or healing of traumatic macular holes through the use of innovative therapeutics (e.g. with amniotic membranes or autologous platelet concentrate).
