Glaucoma

Definition of

The term glaucoma refers to damage to the optic nerve with typical changes to the optic disc that lead to characteristic visual field defects. Various diseases can cause glaucoma, which is often, but not always, associated with increased intraocular pressure.

Diagnostics

Numerous examinations are required when treating patients with glaucoma or suspected glaucoma. In addition to the general ophthalmological examination and measurement of intraocular pressure, examinations are carried out on the function of the eye (e.g. visual field examination) and the anatomy of the eye (e.g. photography of the optic nerve head, laser-assisted measurements of the retina and optic nerve head).

Therapy

The treatment of choice is lowering the intraocular pressure with eye drops or mild laser treatment. If the intraocular pressure cannot be sufficiently regulated in this way or if there are intolerances to eye drops, we have a wide range of surgical procedures available to reduce the intraocular pressure. In addition to classic procedures such as cyclophotocoagulation or covered goniotrepanation, innovative surgical methods are also used. Here we use the iStent inject® W and the Kahook Dual Blade® in the field of minimally invasive glaucoma surgery. The PRESERFLOTM and the Ahmed® Glaucoma Valve are also established in shunt surgery. Which product is used depends on the treatment procedure, which is determined by the patient together with the treatment team.

We for you

Our aim is to recognise and prevent the progression of your disease as early as possible. To this end, we use diagnostic and surgical procedures in our clinic and incorporate the latest findings from science and research so that you can benefit from these innovations.
