Intravitreal surgical drug administration is an outpatient treatment method in which certain drugs are administered directly into the eye (vitreous body) under surgical conditions.

At our Centre for Intravitreal Therapy (ZIT), we treat the entire spectrum of diseases of the macula (the area of sharpest vision) and the retina:

• age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
• diabetic retinal diseases
• retinal vascular occlusion of the retina
• Macular diseases with high myopia
• Macular diseases in the context of intraocular inflammation (inflammation)
• Macular diseases in rare retinal diseases (e.g. Coats' disease)

The standardised treatment steps begin with patient registration in our macular consultation - here you will receive a comprehensive examination of your retina and macula. As a rule, treatment is started with medication to dilate the eyes so that driving is no longer permitted on these days. We therefore ask you to come either accompanied or by public transport.

The following imaging modalities are available for the examination of the retina:

• Ultra-widefield imaging device with integrated swept-source OCT
• Spectral domain OCT with integrated angioplex module (OCT angiography)
• Wide-angle fluorescein angiography
• Wide-angle indocyanine green angiography

In order to reduce the frequency of patient visits, check-ups and intravitreal surgical medication (IVOM) are performed on the same day.

To prevent permanent visual impairment, new or emergency patients with macular disease requiring treatment can also undergo IVOM treatment on the day of their first appointment in urgent cases.

Appointments can be made by e-mail, fax and telephone. The University Eye Clinic is difficult to reach by telephone due to the high number of calls.
