Determination of hormone status in the case of an unfulfilled desire to have children
As female hormone levels are very dependent on the menstrual cycle, a blood test for hormones should always be carried out at the beginning of the cycle, i.e. with the period, for example between the 2nd and 5th day of the cycle. This blood test to determine the hormones normally includes all hormones that influence the cycle. These include the hormones from the pituitary gland (LH and FSH) and also the hormone status of the thyroid gland (TSH) and the breastfeeding hormone (prolactin). The female and male hormones (oestradiol, testosterone), as well as their precursors (DHEAS, androstenedione) and the free testosterone index are of course also part of the blood test. We often also determine the hormone level of the AMH value, but this is independent of the menstrual cycle.
The costs of the hormone status in the diagnosis of an unfulfilled desire to have children are covered by statutory health insurance (GKV); private health insurers (PKV) generally also cover these hormone tests.
