Psychosomatic aspects of fertility protection

All fertility restrictions have an impact on relationships, family and sexuality and are associated with considerable psychological stress, as (prospective) family planning is often a very important concern for cancer patients at the time of diagnosis. Women with endometriosis, women who wish to have children and transgender people will be asked about their quality of life and their knowledge of fertility-preserving therapies. Analysing this data will help to identify the corresponding care and information needs and - on the basis of these findings - offer supportive psychological interventions to cope with these various stresses.

Project goals

  • Qualitative and quantitative identification of the psychosocial burdens of different groups of people who want to make use of fertility protection (men, women, children, oncological patients, endometriosis patients, transgender people, in the case of "social freezing")
  • Empirical assessment of the psychosocial support needs of these groups of people in the context of fertility preservation
  • Recording the effects of fertility-restricting situations on partnership, family and sexuality
  • Recognising the different individual needs of women, men, children and transgender people, depending on their different ages and cultural backgrounds
  • Developing, establishing and evaluating supportive and helpful psychological interventions based on the identified needs.
  • Collaboration with co-operation partners and patient representatives (e.g. KORN self-help group, CCCU-associated self-help representatives) for scientific evaluation and establishment of future structures in research, clinic and practice

The FePro-Ulm is intended to make a decisive contribution and add value by focussing the target groups on women, men, children, trans*gender people, individuals with endometriosis, in the context of various social and cultural aspects and age structures and by involving those affected and representatives as well as public relations work. The interdisciplinary collaboration between the women's clinic, paediatrics, ethical medicine, human genetics / haemato-oncology / gynaecological oncology and psychosomatics is central and innovative, and has not yet existed in this form in Germany.
