Welcome to our interdisciplinary centre for traumatology of the midface and skull base!

Traumatology covered by the Clinic for Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery includes injuries to the soft tissues of the head, mouth and neck as well as fractures of the midface such as the nasal pyramid, the bony eye socket, the zygomatic bone and the paranasal sinuses.

Fall injuries and traffic accidents in particular lead to fractures in the midface, which require surgical treatment depending on the localisation and dislocation (displacement of the fracture edges). Symptoms after a trauma can include double vision, loss of sensation in the face, problems closing the jaw or visible asymmetries of the facial skull, e.g. after a zygomatic complex fracture.

Fractures of the midface are usually treated by stable screw fixation using small titanium plates, which are placed over the fracture sites through minimally invasive approaches and fixed in place with small screws.

The treatment of soft tissue injuries is carried out taking plastic aesthetic aspects into account and includes reconstructive procedures for larger soft tissue defects.

Injuries involving the base of the skull or the skull bone are treated on an interdisciplinary basis with our colleagues in neurosurgery. In the case of more complex fractures of the jaw, interdisciplinary treatment is carried out together with colleagues from oral and maxillofacial surgery.

The aim of every trauma operation is to restore the original condition, if possible without permanent cosmetic impairment such as scars or changes in shape.
