Why research...

Updating and reviewing the state of medical knowledge is an important part of modern patient treatment. Basic research and clinical studies provide the necessary results to develop and test new treatment options in order to constantly improve patient care.

For this reason, as a university institution, our clinic is committed to research and clinical progress, which is why we conduct both local and prospective multicentre and retrospective studies. We also operate our own clinical research laboratory.

Patient safety and privacy (data protection) are of paramount importance to us. All studies are subject to strict control by the Ethics Committee of the University of Ulm and are conducted in accordance with the guidelines of the Declaration of Helsinki of 2013.

Offer for students

Our clinic offers students the opportunity to do a doctorate in human medicine (Dr med.).

The offer is of course not only aimed at students who are interested in a surgical career. The specialist field of cardiac, thoracic and vascular surgery offers a wide range of opportunities to focus on cardiac, metabolic, intensive care and oncological issues.

Our clinic is constantly offering new projects in all areas. Depending on interest, there is the possibility of carrying out retrospective work and studies with and without patient contact. In addition, we operate our own departmental research laboratory for experimental work.

Close and dedicated supervision by the entire team is guaranteed for all doctoral theses.

If you are interested in a doctoral thesis, please contact the head of the clinic, Prof. A. Liebold, the head of the research laboratory, PD Dr Hoenicka, OA Dr H. Gorki or the secretariats of the Clinic for Cardiac Surgery, Thoracic Surgery Section or Vascular Surgery Section.
