The Institute of Virology is dedicated to the diagnosis and research of diseases caused by viruses and the development of new antiviral therapeutic approaches. We offer the entire spectrum of virological diagnostics and also carry out highly specialised services, such as resistance testingagainst various viral drugs. One focus of our work at Ulm University Hospital is the virological monitoring of immunosuppressed patients, in particular patients following stem cell transplantation. Our research activities focus on persistent infections caused by herpes viruses, in particular the human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) → .

The Institute of Virology is a consultant laboratory of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) → for human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) with a focus on HCMV infections in immunocompromised individuals. As an expert laboratory for the Institute for Quality Assurance in Virus Diagnostics - IQVD and INSTAND - the Institute of Virology is involved in the continuous improvement of diagnostic test procedures.
