The spine is a complex anatomical construct consisting of vertebral bodies, intervertebral discs and intervertebral joints. It supports the entire body and makes it possible to walk upright. The spinal canal also contains the spinal cord and therefore parts of the central nervous system. Due to this central role, cooperation between different medical specialities is often essential for diagnosis and treatment of complaints and injuries to the spine.
The interdisciplinary spine centre ensures competent care under one roof through the collaboration of neurosurgery, trauma surgery and the pain therapy section. At the centre is the question: Where are the complaints coming from? Once this is known, the optimum therapy for each patient is developed in consultation with all those involved.
The Spine Centre also establishes a second opinion management system at Ulm University Hospital
. If, for example, an operation is under discussion, the specialist departments jointly clarify whether this is the best option from the point of view of all
experts or whether alternative therapies are possible.
