The Ulm Psychotherapeutic and Psychoanalytic Institute e.V. (UPPI e.V.) trains psychologists who have completed a diploma or master's degree to become psychotherapists in accordance with the Psychotherapists Act in depth psychology-based psychotherapy (Department 1, FB 1) and in analytically based methods (Department 2, FB 2).
The Institute is recognised by the Regional Council of Baden-Württemberg as an independent training centre for specialist psychotherapists in accordance with § 6 of the Psychotherapists Act. The UPPI is a member of 3ABW.
A degree in psychology is a prerequisite for admission to the training programme. For both depth-psychology-based methods and analytical methods, three preliminary interviews are required with the authorised training therapists or training analysts. The names and addresses can be obtained from the respective departmental secretariat.
In accordance with the Psychotherapists Act, one year of practical work in a psychiatric clinic and six months of psychosomatic work must be completed at the beginning of the UPPI training programme, if possible. The UPPI has concluded co-operation agreements with several psychiatric and psychosomatic clinics in the region for this practical work. In order for the activity to be recognised, a training contract must have been concluded with the UPPI before the activity begins.
Training for specialisms 1 and 2 takes place jointly for both specialisms in the first four semesters. To this end, the UPPI cooperates with the Seminar for Psychotherapeutic Further Training, which enables doctors to acquire the additional qualification of psychotherapy in accordance with the further training regulations of the Baden-Württemberg Medical Association. The in-depth curricular training then takes place in two separate specialisms:
In specialism 1 (depth psychology-based psychotherapy), the UPPI cooperates with the Clinic for Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy at Ulm University Hospital. The latter also offers further training and continuing education events at the clinic.
As a member of the UPPI, the PAU is responsible for the training of psychologists in Department 2 (analytical psychotherapy and depth psychology-based psychotherapy). This training follows the guidelines for training and further education of the DPV and the DGPT. At the same time, in-depth training takes place in accordance with the requirements of the Psychotherapists Act in analytically based methods.
The training courses are generally organised in such a way that they can be combined with a simultaneous professional activity.
The seminar and treatment rooms are located together with the secretariat and the UPPI training outpatient clinic in the rooms of the Clinic for Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy at Ulm University Hospital, Albert-Einstein-Allee 23, 89081 Ulm. The application and accounting office is located at Heimstraße 19, 89073 Ulm.
In the first four semesters, the theoretical seminar and the initial interview seminar take place together with the medical trainees.
The in-depth training programme begins in the 5th semester. The seminar dates can be found in the UPPI semester programme.
During the training, which lasts at least five years, a permanent position is usually required in order to be able to finance the considerable costs of teaching therapy, teaching analysis, supervision, semester and seminar fees.
The following costs are incurred:
- UPPI semester fees for the entire training programme €250
- Seminar fees in the first four semesters €700 per semester
- Seminar fees from the 5th semester in FB 1 450,-€ to 500,-€ per semester
- Seminar fees from the 5th semester in FB 2 €300 per semester
- Fees for self-awareness 80,-€ to 100,-€ per hour
- Fees for supervision of training cases 80,-€ to 100,-€ per hour
- Examination fees 450,-€
Self-awareness and supervision are offered by training analysts, training therapists and supervisors recognised by the UPPI. The fees are agreed privately and are currently between €80 and €100, depending on the rates charged by the insurance companies.
As part of the training, initial interviews, short-term therapies and long-term therapies are carried out under supervision. These therapies are billed via the UPPI outpatient clinic. This income can usually be used to finance the full training programme.
For the content of the training, please refer to the regulations of the Psychotherapists Act on the one hand and the respective UPPI semester programme on the other.

Additional further training in psychotherapy for registered doctors (as a 2-year, part-time curriculum in Ulm)
In addition to a specialist's expertise, the additional training in psychotherapy covers the prevention, recognition and psychotherapeutic treatment of illnesses and disorders that are caused by psychosocial factors and stress reactions.
In cooperation with the Clinic for Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy at Ulm University Hospital, a course in depth psychology-basedpsychotherapy is offered every two years in the winter semester at the Seminar for Psychotherapeutic Training . Initial interviews can be started very early on, after the start of the training therapy. After 10 successfully supervised initial interviews (5 in the treatment seminar, 5 with a supervisor) (equivalent to an intermediate examination), the treatment phase, which takes place in close co-operation with the UPPI, can begin.
The training programme consists of theory, self-awareness and practice:

- 150 hours of individual self-experience, alternatively 40 hours of group and 70 hours of individual self-experience (teaching therapists)

The focus of this training course is the resource-oriented counselling interview. As a basis for this, we will explain the evaluation and interpretation of 24-hour measurements with reference to the activity log using specific examples. At the end of the day, you will receive practice cases from us, analyse them and receive feedback in the next session. You should then be ready to start your own measurements and consultations. If you have any questions, further supervision is available at the usual hourly rate. Participation in the course can earn 10 CME points.
A quality circle on "Psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy of chronic pain disorders" takes place once a quarter at the Department of Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy at Ulm University Hospital under the direction of Dr Martin Körner.
All professional groups involved in the diagnosis and treatment of chronic (primary) pain (doctors, psychotherapists, psychologists, art/music/body/creative therapists, etc.) are invited to attend.
The participants exchange views on topics relating to everyday clinical practice in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with chronic pain disorders, with special consideration of psychosomatic and psychotherapeutic aspects. The topics of the quality circles are varied and include case presentations (sometimes with video presentations), current psychosomatic disease models and therapeutic approaches for chronic (primary) pain syndromes, discussion of current study results or keynote speeches. The quality circle is used for further training of the participants, intervision and also for better networking of those involved in the care of chronic pain patients.
The quality circles are certified by the relevant medical association and participants receive 3 CME points.
If you are interested, you can subscribe to a mailing list and you will be informed about the dates.
