The subject of medical psychology aims to sensitise future doctors' ability to perceive mental processes and influence them for the benefit of the patient. The subject areas of psychology as a whole are of great importance for explaining the development and treatment of somatic and mental illnesses. The main subjects of medical psychology include the doctor-patient relationship, dealing with the seriously ill and dying, coping with illness, co-operative relationships and conflicts in teamwork or the excessive demands placed on doctors.
The subject of medical psychology is part of the first section of the medical examination (Physikum) according to the licensing regulations.
Further courses

The lecture presents the disorders relevant to psychosomatic medicine as well as their development mechanisms and treatment options. The most important psychotherapeutic procedures are also presented.
In the seminar, knowledge of psychosomatic clinical pictures and their treatment is deepened. For this purpose, students can often interview patients from the Clinic for Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy during the seminar. The experiences, clinical picture and treatment options are then discussed.

- Medical dialogue, the "difficult conversation"
- Conversations in palliative care
In the 5th semester, students are given the opportunity to conduct guided practice interviews with specially trained actors ("simulation patients") parallel to the "Internal Medicine" examination course. Each exercise is analysed in the small group with video support.
In this seminar, communication skills are expanded. Students deal with difficult situations and special challenges. Practical discussions are also held with simulated patients. Each exercise is analysed in the small group with video support.
In future, this seminar will be incorporated into the extended conversation management course (7th semester). After a detailed theoretical introduction to special conversation techniques with seriously ill and dying patients, students have the opportunity to practise such a conversation with a simulated patient.
