Especially for men and boys
"Men's health encompasses those dimensions of health and illness that are particularly relevant for men and boys." (Stiftung Männergesundheit) - This is a comprehensive definition of men's health. In fact, women and men suffer from different illnesses with different frequency and severity.
In the narrower sense, men's health encompasses complaints and diseases of the male urogenital tract, i.e. the male reproductive organs and prostate as well as the ureters, bladder and kidneys. The medical speciality of urology is responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases. It goes without saying that urologists also treat diseases of the female kidneys and bladder.
The prostate
Benign and malignant diseases of the prostate are among the most common male diseases. From the age of 40, benign prostate enlargement can occur, which can be treated with proven and gentle surgical procedures at the Clinic for Urology and Paediatric Urology if the disease progresses. Prostate cancer (prostate carcinoma), on the other hand, is one of the most common types of cancer in men and the third most common cause of death from cancer after bowel and lung cancer. Prostate cancer can be easily and completely cured at an early stage. However, men's health is also characterised by the fact that men are statistically considered to be poor preventers.
The Prostate Cancer Centre
As with cancer in general, men who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer also benefit from treatment in a special prostate cancer centre, where the various medical disciplines work together on an interdisciplinary basis. The Prostate Cancer Centre at Ulm University Hospital is certified in accordance with the quality criteria of the German Cancer Society (DKG). In addition, the Department of Urology and Paediatric Urology also treats cancers of the kidneys, bladder and testicles using state-of-the-art procedures.
Specialised treatment spectrum
One area of the clinic specialises in paediatric and adolescent urology. In boys, for example, congenital malformations of the internal and external male genitalia, such as phimosis or undescended testicles, are part of the treatment spectrum.
