As part of the orthodontic assessment of children and adolescents, we screen the temporomandibular joint as standard. This is necessary in order to recognise risks and prevent complications in the event of planned orthodontic changes to the bite.

Discomfort in the temporomandibular joint can be caused by a missing prosthetic restoration, for example. In these cases, we as orthodontists are unfortunately unable to correct the cause and recommend that you see your family dentist. However, misaligned teeth and misaligned jaws can also cause TMJ problems. This is where we orthodontists can help you.

We use manual functional analysis to examine and diagnose complaints in the temporomandibular joint. In some cases where structural damage to the temporomandibular joint is suspected, additional diagnostic imaging is carried out using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Patients whose temporomandibular joint problems are caused by misaligned teeth or jaws receive customised treatment with the help of bite splints, physiotherapy and/or rehabilitation of the lower jaw position. Subsequent orthodontic treatment may be necessary to stabilise a pain-free lower jaw position.

Please note that purely orthodontic treatment after the age of 18 - even in connection with complaints in the temporomandibular joint - is not covered by statutory health insurance.
