At the ENT University Hospital Ulm, we offer surgical treatment of benign and malignant thyroid diseases. In the case of so-called goitre (enlargement) with or without nodules, the main indication for surgery is local symptoms (difficulty swallowing, shortness of breath) as well as unclear findings to rule out malignant disease. The indication for surgery is made in co-operation with the resident hormone specialists (endocrinologists) and general practitioners as well as colleagues from the internal medicine and nuclear medicine departments.
The surgical procedures used are selected according to the changes in the thyroid gland. Intraoperative monitoring of the vocal cord nerve is carried out as standard for every operation.
The vocal fold function is also checked in-house before and after the operation. Should temporary vocal fold paralysis occur postoperatively, we can treat this with modern voice surgery therapy measures.
The surgical treatment concepts comply with the guidelines of the German Society for Surgery and the interdisciplinary guidelines of the German Cancer Society in collaboration with the German Society for Surgery.
