As part of the project, an online course was developed jointly by the Clinic for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry/Psychotherapy at Ulm University Hospital, Germany and the Swedish National Child Protection Centre Barnafrid, Linköping University.

Project duration

03/2023-02/2025

Project description

The aim of the project is to identify the obstacles to recording child abuse and neglect and to help minimise them with a newly developed online course "Recognising and documenting child abuse in medicine". The timing is ideal, as professionals will have to re-familiarise themselves with the recording process anyway with the upcoming change to ICD-11 and there are now additional options for documenting child abuse and its context. Ultimately, better recording of abuse and neglect will help to identify gaps in the care of vulnerable children and families. The online course is aimed at paediatricians, paediatric surgeons, emergency physicians and medical documenters involved in the diagnostic and administrative coding process.

The online course, which starts in April 2024, is available in a German and a Swedish version for free participation. The course has a modular structure and consists of 5 modules with a total of 19 learning units. It begins with an overview of the general theoretical principles of child abuse and neglect. It also contains information on child protection that is specifically tailored to the healthcare context. This includes the coding of child abuse, as well as legal principles, dialogue and the participation of children and parents in healthcare. In addition to imparting knowledge through basic principles and legal texts, the course also emphasises case-based application of the coding of child abuse and neglect.
