The project is being carried out in cooperation with Prof Dr Markus Huber-Lang and his team from the Institute for Clinical and Experimental Trauma Immunology.
Project description
Mental stress can cause stress in the body. Stress is controlled in the body by a system of hormones known as the stress axis. Very high levels of stress can lead to deviations in the regulation of this stress axis in the body. These deviations can also lead to an overactivation of the immune system.
The immune system uses its immune cells to defend the body against harmful foreign substances such as viruses and bacteria. However, an overactive immune system can also be harmful to the body. For example, it has been shown that young people who have experienced psychological stress have a higher level of immune cell activity. This increased immune activity appears to be involved in the development of diseases such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
In the PINA study, we are therefore investigating what influence the experience of psychological stress has on the immune system. It is interesting to see whether the activation of the immune system differs between patients with PTSD and healthy controls.
We are therefore looking for patients with PTSD and healthy controls aged 14-17 years to take part in the study. The cost of participation will be compensated with 30€.
