Project description

Healthcare workers are exposed to increased work-related stress and work in a "high-risk area" in terms of jeopardising their health (Bertelsmann Foundation, 2004; Agerbo 2007). Demographic change, a shortage of skilled labour and limited hospital funding exacerbate this problem (Müller, 2009). Health risks for employees can be reduced by means of systematic occupational health management, which combines behavioural and situational preventive elements. However, this is lacking in most German hospitals. The overarching aim of this joint project is to develop a complex intervention as a contribution to occupational health management, which includes both qualification and organisational development measures.

In this context, sub-project TP 1.D deals with the prevention of stress-associated health problems in the context of work-life balance in hospitals and addresses employees in the family phase as a target group. The aim is to develop, pilot and evaluate an intervention, known as the "work-life balance toolbox", which combines behavioural and behavioural prevention instruments for those affected.

The joint project is divided into two phases. In phase I (2017 - 2019), five intervention modules will be developed in the individual sub-projects (TP 1. A - E see above) and evaluated differently depending on the format and study situation, and strategies for their implementation will be tested at the individual practice locations. In phase 2 (2019 - 2021), the participatory implementation of the modules developed in the subprojects into a complex intervention will take place at three clinic sites, the effectiveness of which will be evaluated in a cluster-randomised study (SP 2 and SP 3).

As part of phase I, sub-project SP 1.D involves the development, piloting and evaluation of the intervention in a mixed-method design using qualitative and quantitative methods at the Ostalb Clinics practice location. Following a needs analysis using qualitative individual interviews with those affected, the individual intervention modules are developed based on the model of Campbell et al (2000). The intervention is evaluated in a cross-over design with a waiting-control group and on predefined target variables in terms of results and processes. The results will be incorporated into phase II of the joint project.
