Project description

The aim of the project is to offer professional groups who are in contact with sexually abused and/or multiply traumatised children or who bear responsibility in institutions for protection against (sexual) traumatisation an opportunity to receive in-depth training based on the latest scientific findings.

Four online courses were created and evaluated as part of the project:

The courses are aimed at professionals from the educational and medical/therapeutic professions. The "Trauma therapy" and "Trauma education" courses are designed to enable them to better support children and young people who have experienced sexual abuse or other traumatic stress. People who want to take on or have taken on responsibility for the protection of children in institutions can learn how to analyse risks of danger in institutions and develop protection concepts in the course "Protection concepts in organisations - designing protection processes in a participatory and mindful way". The content of the course "Management expertise in child protection in institutions - an online course for managers" is specifically geared towards the role of managers in the context of child protection. The aim is to enable managers to actively shape the development of protection concepts in the institutions they manage (care homes, schools, clinics) and to create a trauma-sensitive environment.

In the first project period (2014-2017), three test cohorts went through the courses. Almost 1,500 people completed one of the courses. The results of the accompanying research show a high level of satisfaction with the courses and the learning materials on offer, as well as an increase in knowledge and skills as a result of completing the course.

All four courses are certified by the Baden-Württemberg Medical Association.

The project was subsequently extended by the BMBF until 31 December 2019. This meant that the courses could continue to be offered for a participation fee. The objectives of the project in the extension phase were the implementation of a payment mechanism in the courses, further evaluations of the courses as well as the development of concepts for accompanying face-to-face courses, the implementation of face-to-face courses and the evaluation of the courses. With a total of 824 graduates, the courses also met with great interest in this project phase. With regard to the course evaluation, it should be noted that the participants were very satisfied with the structure and content of the learning programmes. The course fee was judged to be reasonable.

Participation in the online courses is possible for a fee via the Saarland Child Protection Platform(https://kinderschutz-im-saarland.de/).
