Competence Centre for Child Protection in Medicine Baden-Württemberg

Child endangerment usually arises from a complex interplay of various factors. The different preconditions in the development make child protection care an interdisciplinary field. It is therefore important to consider the different disciplinary perspectives in order to improve prevention and intervention in cases of child abuse. The Competence Centre for Child Protection(www.comcan.de) and the W1 professorships "Epidemiology and Progression Research in Child Protection" and "Teaching, Dissemination and Networking in Child Protection" therefore aim to network practitioners from the various care areas and integrate them into research. However, it is not only practice that should be heard; the voice of the children, the people affected themselves, should also be part of the research as often as possible.

Our focal points

Professorship "Epidemiology and follow-up research in child protection"

This hitherto unique specialisation of a chair in the German-speaking world is intended to contribute to reducing the large national and international gaps in research on the prevalence and incidence of child abuse, the extent of help and services for the children concerned and their further development.

The professorship focuses on research into the prevalence of child maltreatment in the population and studies on the extent of known cases in the health and social services, the type and amount of help and services provided. It also examines how abused children develop after various interventions and what physical complaints, psychological stress and social problems they have to cope with. Particular attention is paid to groups that have an increased risk of being abused - children with disabilities, children in institutions, refugee children.

Professorship "Teaching, dissemination and networking in child protection"

The second chair, which is also unique in the German-speaking world with this focus, will work closely with the "Knowledge Transfer, Dissemination, E-Learning" working group to help improve the transfer of knowledge in the field of child protection. This includes an expansion of teaching on the subject, particularly in the fields of medicine, psychology and psychotherapy. The professorship includes courses on child abuse and child protection at all medical universities in Baden-Württemberg.

Furthermore, the conditions for success as well as obstacles to dissemination and networking will be analysed in order to establish and disseminate prevention and intervention measures in practice.
