Ultrasound of the intestine

Abdominal pain and diarrhoea are some of the most common complaints in the population. The causes of these complaints can be varied. Examination of the intestinal structures using ultrasound can often quickly lead to a definitive diagnosis.

The intestinal ultrasound method can be used to diagnose appendicitis (acute appendicitis), acute intestinal obstruction of the small intestine (ileus), acute diverticulitis (diverticulitis is the inflammation of a diverticulum (sac-shaped protrusion of the large intestine)) and changes in the intestinal wall, as can occur in chronic inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis).

The examination of the intestinal wall using Doppler techniques is very helpful in assessing disease activity in chronic inflammatory bowel diseases and is a research focus of our ultrasound department.
