Elastography is a new ultrasound procedure for measuring tissue stiffness or elasticity. A coloured representation of tissue elasticity is superimposed on the normal ultrasound image. Hard or stiffer tissue is shown in blue/purple, medium-hard tissue in green/yellow and soft tissue in red by colour coding.
As a rule, tumour tissue tends to be harder and less deformable than healthy tissue and would therefore have a blue/purple colour representation. This additional indication is intended to better identify malignant tissue and make it easier to decide whether a tissue sample needs to be taken.
The reliability of elastography and its clinical suitability are currently being tested in a series of studies.
