The Geriatric Centre Ulm / Alb-Donau was founded in March 1995 as a merger of various institutions. The steering committee therefore consists of representatives from the following institutions:

• University of Ulm (Ulm University Hospital)
• Ulm University and Rehabilitation Clinics (RKU)
• Krankenhaus GmbH Alb-Donau-Kreis (Ehingen Geriatric Centre)
• City of Ulm (social mayor)
• District of Alb-Donau (Head of Social Affairs)

Bethesda Chief Physician Prof Michael Denkinger has been Chairman of the GZU Steering Committee since 2015. The medical management of the office alternates annually between the university hospital and the RKU. Currently, PD Dr J. Klaus from the University Hospital (Internal Medicine) holds the position of Managing Director.

For over 20 years, the GZU has been the first point of contact for hospitals and all institutions providing care for the elderly in the city and district. It is one of seven geriatric centres in Baden-Württemberg that take turns to host the annual State Geriatrics Day.

The state's 25th Geriatrics Day took place in Ulm in October 2016. Under the motto "Networked geriatric medicine - interprofessional, interdisciplinary, regional", specialists from the region and the state met in the Stadthaus.
